New Mexico Representative MPLA Board Report
April 2008

New Mexico Library Association – annual conference was held April 9-11, 2008 in Las Cruces, NM with 363 attendees. The keynote speaker was Dr. Loriene Roy who spoke on the topic “Service to ALA: Bringing Opportunity, Messaging, and Indigenous Voice”.

State Librarian, Susan Oberlander presented a forum titled “An Open Hearing Before the New Mexico State Library Commission to Discuss Priorities for Library Services Technology Act Projects in New Mexico” at the annual conference. Highlights of the discussion included defining the awarding of “sub grants should take place” as this has been a priority for public libraries.

New Board members were present at the NMLA Business meeting. They are:
Cassandra Osterloh, President
Dan Kammer Vice President-Elect
Kathleen Teaze, Treasurer
Betty Long, ALA Councilor
Paulita, Aguilar, Susan Pinkerton, and Laurie Treat, Members-At-Large

Highlights of the business meeting include:

• A motion was made and passed to include the Intellectual Freedom statement on the NMLA website.

• New Mexico Reads campaign has been initiated. All New Mexico libraries are invited to participate in this campaign. The purpose for the campaign is “a reading and literacy campaign promoted and sponsored by the NMLA to celebrate the literary and artistic talent of authors and artists from New Mexico”.

The new New Mexico Library Association logo was unveiled at the Awards Banquet. James Carpenter of Farmington Public Library was the winning designer.

The Fall Mini-Conference will be held in Socorro, NM on October 16-7, 2008.
