Under general supervision of the Library Manager, the Librarian II - Youth Services oversees branch-level services to youth and their caregivers. This position provides direct customer service to library customers, conducts community outreach, supervises classified and non-classified staff and volunteers, and provides building supervision.  This position is responsible for oversight and coordination of scheduling story times and children’s programming and related outreach services, along with supervision, training, coaching and development of staff.  Work is performed with independent judgment and initiative.  The Librarian II - Youth Services is charged with modeling quality customer service behaviors which align with the Library District’s mission and values.   This position works collaboratively with Library District colleagues to provide services and materials to children and families.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Education and Experience:

Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university or equivalent required.  Two years of related work experience in a technologically progressive library is preferred.   Evidence of supervisory or leadership skills.  Direct experience involving library reference services, information services and/or circulation services, with emphasis on children and their parents or caregivers. 

Language Abilities:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.  Fluency in English is required.  Fluency in Spanish or other language in addition to English is preferred. 

Reasoning Abilities:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements:
None required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises classified employees who deliver story time, including scheduling oversight and coaching on industry best practices.  Makes recommendations on personnel matters affecting subordinates, including interviewing applicants, hiring new employees, evaluating performance, and taking corrective action. Assists in the compilation and reporting of statistics.
