Reference & Instructional Librarian
Is directly accountable and responsible to the Director of Library Services.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of library reference services.
- Responsible for the development, coordination, and delivery of library instruction and information literacy efforts, including marketing and outreach to the campus community.
- Responsible for day-to-day management of interlibrary loan services and serials.
- Responsible for day-to-day management of BSC archives collection.

Library reference and instruction services – 50%
- Provides reference and research services to students, faculty, staff, and other library users in person, electronically, and by telephone.
- Designs and implements the library’s course-integrated instruction programs and works closely with faculty to do so. Conducts instructional sessions for on-campus and online courses.
- Develops online and print research and instructional materials, including how-to guides, lectures, workshops, web-based tutorials, prerecorded sessions, etc.
- Assists with creating, enhancing, and maintaining library website content and Web resources.
- Assists with technical operations related to our LMS (library management system) and ODIN (Online Dakota Information Network).
- Assists with reference and general collection development.
- Schedules reference desk services.
- Assists with circulation services for students, faculty, staff, and other library users.
- Assists with library tours for BSC Admissions and other individuals or groups.
- Keeps reference and instruction statistics.
Archives Services – 25%
- Works in conjunction with Director of Library Services and other library staff to acquire, preserve, organize, describe, and provide access to archival collections.
- Develops and maintains digital resources, including scanning materials and entering information into discovery interfaces (e.g., ContentDM).
- Creates, maintains, and updates inventories, finding aids, and descriptions of archival collections.
- Responds to reference and research inquiries in person, electronically, and by telephone. Assists users who want to use archives collections in-person.
- Makes recommendations for archives best practices, policies, and procedures.
- Organizes archives work assignments for part-time library staff.
- Keeps archives statistics.
Serials Management and Interlibrary Loan Services – 15%
- Manages interlibrary loan services, including processing requests, maintaining records, and statistics. Delegates tasks as appropriate.
- Manages serials, including check-in, claims, binding, holdings lists, and statistics. Delegates tasks as appropriate.
- Maintains physical serials collections, including shifting. Delegates tasks as appropriate.
General library support duties – 5%
- Assists in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating student assistants.
- Consults with computer center staff when system technology services are required.
- Provides monthly and other required reports to the Director.
- Assists with design and preparation of library displays.
Miscellaneous duties – 5%
- Serves on appropriate committees.
- Supports innovation, creativity and ideas to improve/enhance processes, functions, etc. in the department and as a whole for the college.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.
- Service-oriented and able to establish rapport with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to use online databases and services, and to instruct others in their use.
- Experienced and knowledgeable about current reference resources and practices.
- Knowledgeable about current teaching methods, educational technologies, and software.
- Familiar with current trends in academic libraries and higher education.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills, organizational and time management skills, and ability to direct the assigned work of others.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Proficiency in and working knowledge of computer software programs (i.e., Microsoft Office, email and electronic calendar, etc.) and excellent keyboarding skills.
- Thorough knowledge of library classification systems.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend coverage.
- Experience in a comparable position.
- Demonstrated teaching experience, both synchronous and asynchronous.
- Experience with educational technologies, such as course and learning management systems, and their applications in academic libraries.
